Resiliency and Mitigation of Critical and
Essential Facilities for Natural Hazards:
Planning, Design & Retroļ¬t

Critical and essential Facilities are buildings and other structures that are intended to remain operational in the event of extreme environmental loading from Flood, Wind, Snow, or Earthquakes. Recent and historical evidence has shown that critical and essential facilities have had their core mission impacted or fully compromised due to environmental damage from storms. These facilities serve vital functions for the community before, during and after storm events and thus have a higher functional requirements and service demands than other typical buildings. They therefore have lower acceptable damage threshold since it must be in service not just repairable after event. Lessons learned from recent disaster studies [Irma, Maria, and Michael] will be shared as well as examples and experiences from our practice will be shared.
