The Jacksonville 2050 Competition
Mentors Needed.
The Jacksonville Post is participating in an outreach project with University of North Florida (UNF) and American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). The overall goal is to encourage high school students to pursue a civil engineering degree and to expose these potential new engineers to the dynamics of a reall project - including its scope of work, budget restraints, time frames, use of consultants, teamwork, etc.
The high school teams must come up with a new vision for downtown Jacksonville in 2050. The downtown vision will be centered upon the St. Johns River with a new bridge across the river replacing the Main Street bridge. The challenge will be to solve an engineering problem starting from an "unconventional approach" and then incorporate "classic tools" - such as mathematics, technology, and/or physics. "Unconventional approach" is defined as a solution based on the arts rather than science.
The competition will be among eight to ten high schools from Duval, Saint Johns, Nassau, and Clay Counties. We are calling for the support of loal engineering firms to mentor one of our local high school teams.
The competition will consist of:
Phase I
1. High School Letter of Interest
2. The Jacksonville 2050 Vision Layout, Decription, and Rendering
Phase II
1. Construction of the scale-model concrete bridge
2. Development of a final Design and Construction Report
3. Scoring for Phase II
The event will occur at the University of North Florida's campus. Final presentations and judgment of the first phase will be during the "2017 Engineering Week," usually in February of each year while the second construction phase will take place in April 2017 as part of UNFs senior symposium and Innovation Day events.
