Stephen Duba Retires!

After 47 years of combined military and civilian federal service, Mr. Stephen Duba effective December 31st 2019 from the U.S, Army Corps of Engineers. His most recent role was as Chief of the Construction Division and he had previously also served as Chief of Engineering. Post members attended his luncheon which took place at the River City Brewing Company, near the USACE JAX office. Mr. Duba was also awarded the Army Engineering Association Bronze DeFleury medal during the ceremony.

Young Member Field Trip

The SAME JAX Post Young Members invite you to attend the LB2 Lung Bioengineering Field Trip at the Mayo Clinic Campus March 8th from 10am - 12pm hosted by Whiting-Turner. There is no cost to attendees. 

Jobsite attire - no shorts, close-toed shoes only. Hardhats and safety vests can be provided.

Jumbo Shrimp Baseball Game - Save the Date!

Saturday night, 11 May 2019.  The game starts at 1905 hrs, picnic area / food starts at 1800 hrs.  We've got SkyBox 1 reserved this year, which is along the baseline and not right behind home plate.

UF SAME Chapter News for February 2019

We’ve got some exciting announcements from the UF Chapter of SAME:


The UF and UNF Chapters of SAME have been invited by both Capt. Monreal, the Commanding Officer for the Naval Facilities Engineering Command Southeast (NAVFAC SE)  in addition to Capt. Manalo, NAVFAC SE’s Executive Officer. Additionally, this invitation has also been extended to our peers in ASCE as well. Due to the security and logistics involved, some planning is required to help coordinate for optimal attendance. I’d like to present to their leadership with our top date requests. They can help streamline approvals for getting us on base. If you could, please use the following Google Form to help put down your optimal days of the week and weeks remaining in the semester.

Our visit might also include a tour of NAS JAX’s P-8A simulators

Our Next SAME JAX Post Meeting

If you are available next week to take a trip to Jacksonville, our next meeting is Feb 20th.  Reply to this email to check and see if some of our free student spots are available. We can also coordinate travel / carpooling there, as well.


The SAME JAX Post awards $Thousands of scholarships each year and we are currently accepting scholarships. The deadline is April 30th. Please visit for more information.

Nominations for 2019 – 2020 Officers

If you are interested in serving as an officer for the next academic calendar year, please let me know what position you are interested in. If you are an existing officer and want to run for the same position, you are allowed to do so, per our (draft) Charter / Bylaws.

Future UF SAME meeting Save the Dates:

  • March 18th - Willard Shafer – a SAME Life Member, Registered Professional Engineer (retired), Past SAME Post President Guam), retired CEC, USN Captain and retired UF College of Engineering faculty member and Assistant Dean for Academic Programs.  He chaired the UF ROTC Committee for 5 years in the 1980s and Coordinated the Construction Engineering Management Graduate Program in Civil Engineering for 10 years. 


  • April 8th - Akea / Akea Design – a Gainesville area SAME Sustaining Member and Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business. They offer a variety of services ranging from Design Build, Construction Management, Facilities Planning, Environmental Compliance, and much more. They will be presenting on some of their latest projects supporting the DoD.


  • April 22nd -  Rob Smedley - RS&H – a Large A&E company, will be coming to discuss the emerging trend of Design-Build delivery in the AEC Industry.
