Speaker Bio:
Douglas Pope is President/CEO of the Amelia Research and Recover Company, LLC. He will be speaking about open ocean salvage engineering and the challenges involved in underwater search for historical artifacts off the Florida coast.
Pope joined the U.S. Army in 1968. He was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam where he served as a combat helicopter pilot. In 1974, he joined the Florida National Guard where he continued a 31-year aviation career and then transferred to the U. S. Army Reserves and served in Operation Desert Storm. In December 1998, he retired with over 40 years of military service.
Since 1989, Pope has been involved in underwater salvage and the search for shipwrecks off the northeast Florida coast. In 1999, under his direction Amelia Research began construction of the lift-boat, Polly-L, which was one of the first ships specifically designed for underwater archaeology. In 2001 the Polly-L began working the wreck of the San Miguel Arc Angel off Jupiter Inlet, which was to be their first key find. Since then, they have been working on several shipwreck sites from Amelia Island to Key West.
Pope is in the process of opening The Maritime Museum of Amelia Island which will provide a maritime history of the area from the first recorded ships landing at Amelia Island to the arrival of the Trident submarines at St. Mary’s inlet.
